To help operators of coal-fired power plants meet increasingly stringent air quality regulations, URS applies a variety of clean-air technologies that reduce sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, mercury and other particulates from process emissions. These technologies include flue gas desulfurization systems developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) that remove 98 percent of sulfur dioxide from coal-fired plant emissions, which URS offers in a joint venture with MHI called Advatech LLC. Currently, the system is being used by power plants operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, Southern Company and AES Corporation.
URS also is an exclusive provider of a patented sodium bisulphite (SBS) injection technology that reduces sulfur trioxide emissions. We offer the process in a variety of configurations, from a simple process technology package to a fully installed turnkey system. The first commercial application of sulfuric acid emissions control using our SBS-injection technology was implemented at a Pennsylvania power plant.
